A website for art in urban space

For CURRENT – Art and Urban Space in Stuttgart we built the festival website with Drupal. Its centrepiece: an interactive map showing a programme spread across the whole city.

CURRENT – Art and Urban Space is a transdisciplinary festival in Stuttgart, conceived as a biennial, that closely links artistic practice with processes of urban transformation. It was founded in 2020 by Laura Bernhardt as an active contribution to the debate on realigning the programmes for art in architecture and art in public space. Three festivals with changing thematic focuses have been realised so far, examining and questioning urban space from an artistic perspective.

A festival that takes place all over the city needs a website that reflects this. We built it with Drupal: programme, participants, locations and topics are linked content types, so the team creates each event once and it appears wherever it belongs.

Highlight: the map

CURRENT's projects are spread across the whole of Stuttgart, from the Ziegelklinge estate to the Delphi Arthaus cinema. The interactive map turns this into a walk: every number on the map is a location, next to it the locations run as cards with address and the events taking place there. The same numbers reappear in the programme list, so you can find your way from the date to the map and back.

The look with the colourful animation is by Paul Steinmann, as is the font. We implemented it as a Drupal theme, bilingual and with filters by participant and event day.
